Seminary formation provides us with
many experiences. We learn how to grow
closer to the Lord by developing a deeper prayer life. We have the opportunity to expand our minds
by learning many things about our faith, such as theological concepts and the
study of Sacred Scripture. We also have
the opportunity to build strong friendships in a spirit of fraternity.
We build these friendships with guys
from various dioceses throughout the country, but we also form a fraternal bond
with our fellow Scranton seminarians. I
was recently able to participate in the Ordination liturgies for one such
friend and diocesan brother, Seth Wasnock.
I had the privilege of living across the hall from Seth for one year
while studying at Mount St. Mary’s Seminary.
Throughout the course of that time, we forged a strong friendship, a
friendship that even survived a road trip half way across the country to Omaha,
NE.

I was ordained a transitional deacon
two weeks before Seth’s Ordination to the priesthood, and was able to serve as
a deacon for his Ordination Mass. Being
at Seth’s Ordination was a beautiful and uplifting event, but I was somewhat
preoccupied with where I was supposed to stand and what I was supposed to say
and when I was supposed to say it. However,
I was also blessed to serve as a deacon for his first Mass of
Thanksgiving. Thus far, serving Seth’s first
Mass has been the greatest moment for me as a deacon. It was such an awesome experience to be at
his side, along with my fellow classmate and friend, Michael Drevitch. We have all known each other for a long time,
and have shared many good times together.
It was humbling to be serving together in our new roles around the altar
of the Lord.
As I continue to reflect on that day, words from Fr.
Brian Clarke’s homily continue to inspire me.
Fr. Clarke, always being full of wisdom, said, “Seth, it is not about
you.” He is right. It is not about any of us. It is about Jesus, who has called each of us
to follow him and serve His Church.
Jesus leads us every step of the way, but he has also provided us with
good friends to walk the journey with us.
We have grown closer to Christ together, and it is exciting to think
about serving the Church of Scranton alongside one another.
