Pizza, prayer, Italian food, conversation, and
college students who are passionate about their faith all made for a great
evening last week! An Evening of Reflection was held for college students last
Thursday at Arcaro & Genell’s Restaurant in Old Forge. Students, campus
ministers, and chaplains from King’s College, Marywood University, Misericordia
University, and the University of Scranton gathered for a meal and discussion
about vocations.
The night began with pizza and networking. Students had
the opportunity to share their faith and meet new people from different
schools. Before the main meal, Father Don Williams, Diocesan Director of
Vocations and Seminarians, gathered everyone for opening introductions and prayer.
Everyone introduced themselves and why they decided to attend. The meal was
blessed, and then it was time for a delicious Italian meal.
After dinner, witness talks were given by Father
Alex Roche, Assistant Pastor at Saint Ignatius Loyola Parish, Kingston and an
Assistant Vocation Director, Sister Mindy Welding, IHM, Director of Vocations
for IHM, and Dominick Costantino, Vocation Program Coordinator. The focus was
on what led them to their vocation and why they continue to say ‘yes’ everyday.
It was clear to the students that the three of them love the work they do by
the passion and enthusiasm in their talks.
Each table then had the opportunity to ponder the
following question: “How do we engage young adults on college campuses to
consider a call to religious life, priesthood or lay ministry?” The tables were
given time to toss ideas off each other and then share with all in attendance.
One thing was clear at this gathering: their
faith is very strong. There is a strong love for the Eucharist and Eucharistic
Adoration and Benediction among these college students. Many expressed how
important it is to have peer ministry on the campuses because the level of
involvement increases. A few hope to see programs such as “Theology on Tap” and
“Catholic Underground” start up in our area.
The night ended with special prayers regarding
vocations. It was clear the group enjoyed themselves because they stayed at
their tables conversing way after the formal evening was over. Be sure to look
for information as we move forward with this college initiative.
